Slider doors are normally two big pieces of glass – usually in the back of your home – and can be a vulnerable entry point. Reinforce your slider locks (if needed) and equip these doors with a metal bar that prevents someone from sliding the door open. You can add locks to the top or bottom of the slider so they can’t be lifted out of the track. Putting a heavy duty dowel rod or broom in the bottom track can also block the door from opening.
If you want to go a step further in your overall glass protection – you can have high strength security film placed on the inside of your glass sliders or windows to prevent entry into your home. Watch this video on ShatterGard Safety Film.
Windows on the main level will be more vulnerable than those on the second story. However, if there is easy access to the second level by a deck, low roof, or a ladder nearby, guess what? The burglar will use it if he notices a window open or it is more secluded from a neighbor’s view. Be sure to get into the habit of securing and locking all windows when you leave your home and never leave a ladder lying next to your home unless it is securely locked and unable to be extended. That just makes it easier for these lazy bums to get into your home. And you don’t want to make it easy!!
Check the locks on your windows and replace with new locks if that is a good option for you. Or you can do a couple of other things – you can place a dowel rod (painted or stained the same color as your window trim) into the far right or left side of the window so that the window can not be lifted up to enter. If you windows slide side to side, then put the dowel rod in the bottom track to prevent sliding open. Dowel rods are a simple and inexpensive way to strengthen your windows. If someone is going to have to break the window (making noise) and cleaning out glass, they may opt to go to an easier home. Make it as difficult as possible and make them work to get into your home!!!!
Consider the telephone interface box on the outside of your home. When I was a security alarm consultant, I always recommended that if the phone lines were visible and vulnerable on the outside of your home – call the phone company to come and move it into the basement or inside of your home. Again, if these punks are professionals, this may be an area they try to disable right away so the homeowner or the alarm cannot call for help.
If you are a handy person, you can always reinforce the phone interface box with a good quality lock, placing any exposed wire in heavy duty conduit. Or you can put the entire phone box in a metal box with a lock. The phone company does not like to put the interface box on the inside of the home, but as a customer of theirs and with persistence, they will do it….but they will also charge you.
