Home Burglaries Around Kansas City On The Rise

As you can see from the news video, home burglaries are on the rise throughout the U.S.  All cities, small and large, are affected by crime.  The fact is these punks find it easier to break into homes and take someone else’s personal belonging rather than to work for a living.  I guess they consider this their job.  These guys (and gals) are basically lazy, lowlifes and you should do everything in your power to make your home as difficult as possible for them to get into. 

If you take the complacent attitude that “it won’t happen to me,” by doing nothing you may eventually become a victim of a break in or a home invasion.  Or the other statement I used to hear all the time, “I don’t need an alarm system, I have a gun for protection.”  Well that’s great but that gun won’t do you one bit of good if you aren’t there to use it.  In fact, the burglars will probably take your gun since that it is one of the major items they are looking to steal.

Since burglars are basically lazy scumbags, what can you do to make your home a difficult target for them to get into?  There really are several ways you can secure and protect your home so that a burglar decides to give it up and move on to an easier home.   Why not be proactive and set up perimeter and interior protection for your home!  I guarantee you will  rest easier at night knowing your home and family are safe.  The peace of mind you get will be well worth any investment you make.  I have posted this information over three separate parts.  Be sure to check out all three. Perimeter Protection:

Doors are usually the first entry point for a burglar.  Did you know that the front door is usually the first targeted entry point?  A person looks less suspicious at the front door - almost like someone is expecting you.  Many neighbors may not pay attention for long to someone waiting at your front door.  The burglar knows it may take only seconds to kick the front door in and be inside the home.

Many doors can be kicked in by the burglar with a well-placed kick that splinters the door around the lock or one that splinters the door frame.  Look at installing solid, hardwood doors or a metal door and avoid hollow-core or softwood doors.  You should know that a strong door will provide little protection if it is mounted in a weak frame.  Be sure that the door frames are also made of hardwood or metal.

As part of the criminal’s job, they know doors and exactly where to kick the door to have the most impact causing it to either bust open or completely come off the hinges falling inside the home. Checkout this video showing a product called "Door Jam Armour". This looks like a pretty solid way of protecting your door. Do you think the burglar would work this hard to get into your home?  Probably not - there are much easier targets!

Check your locks.  Some older homes have had the same locks for 20, 30, 40 years.  It’s time to look at upgrading your locks with good quality deadbolt locks made of case-hardened steel.  A good deadbolt extends an inch or more into the door frame and uses a metal strike plate that is secured with long screws.  With a little force a burglar can easily rip out the door frame by force.  Check all of your current door locks and replace all the short screws with screws that are at least 3” long.  Many new locks come with screws that are too short – replace them with the longer screws.

Consider using a double-cylinder deadbolt instead of a single-cylinder deadbolt type.  The double-cylinder locks are recommended if your door has a glass insert or glass panels next to it.  A burglar can easily smash the glass and reach in to unlock a single-cylinder lock by simply turning the handle, knob or lever.

There are safety considerations with the double-cylinder in case of either a quick exit or a fire – and that is where to keep the key?  Keep the key nearby on a hook and ensure each family member knows where it is located.  Get into the habit of always keeping the key in that location.  It is a good idea from time to time to do a drill with family members making sure they know where the key is and how to use the key to get the door opened.
