Home Burglaries On The Rise-What Are You Doing To Protect Your Family?

November 8th, 2008 · 5 Comments · Home Burglaries, Home Invasion, Home Security

On Thursday, November 6, 2008, the South Bend Tribune had a major article on the front page of the "Local" section on home burglaries on the rise due to the bad economy.  I’m slightly ahead of the curve because I had just written a post last week talking about this precise subject.  (See it in the next post).

After spending 20 years in the home alarm industry this is one of the home burglary trends that  takes place when the economy takes a major dip and people begin to lose their jobs, are out of work for extended periods of                           time, and have become desperate.  I saw this same thing happen back in the early 1990’s.  When the economy goes south and home burglaries increase, homeowners need to become proactive and make sure they are doing all they can to secure and protect their home and family.

What you need to be truly concerned with is the desperate individual(s) who turns to home invasions to "make a living."

What makes a home invasion different from a burglary is the home invader usually comes into your home while you are there and in most cases is looking for a confrontation.  He wants your cash, your ATM pin number to your checking/savings account, your credit cards, your jewelry, access to your money safe, gun safe, and anything else he sees of high value that he can easily take.  The home invader has the dominant upper hand because he caught the homeowner in an unexpected, off-guard situation.

The homeowner must be very careful in the one on one encounter with the home invader as he may be a deranged, violent person who has no qualms about doing the grave harm - as we saw recently when the young anchorwoman from Kansas was brutally beaten in her home and eventually died.  What punk could so brutally beat an innocent young woman like that?  You know who?  A weak, sadistic individual (who should be locked up for life or worse) who preys upon innocent individuals who would never think this type of crime could ever happen to them.

When a burglar breaks into a home, he usually is looking at homes where no one is there because he doesn’t normally want to confront the homeowner.  However, should he meet up with the homeowner, in desperate situations, bad things can happen.  Also most burglars and home invaders don’t want to be identified and that is one reason they might seriously harm the homeowner - so they cannot be identified.

The time is now  to become proactive and make sure you have a well-protected home.  Don’t become a victim of a home burglary or a home invasion.  Right now take a look at your home like a burglar would.  Harden the perimeter of your home and make it as difficult as possible for an intruder to get through.  Make sure you have strong solid locks and deadbolts, beef up the hinges on your doors with longer, stronger screws, install solid core doors, strong windows, and be sure to keep doors and windows locked up especially when you are gone or asleep at night.  And I highly recommend installing a good quality security system with the 24-hour monitoring services.  Check this link for more info - www.proactivehomeprotection.com

Remember, a burglar doesn’t want to spend too much time breaking into your home.  If you have done your job to harden the perimeter, you will cause the burglar or home invader to give up and go to a much easier home.  Get started right now to harden the perimeter and have a good quality security system installed!

Burglaries on rise
Police connect more break-ins to bad economy.

Donna Tieman has lived in her Granger neighborhood for about 13 years. It’s always been safe, she said.

Beginning late last year, however, break-ins started to occur — first to vehicles and then to homes. During a four-week period beginning in late July, four homes were entered — two of them on Tieman’s street, Iron Forge Lane.

Tieman’s house, where she lives with her husband, was nearly the fifth.

"Actually, when the burglaries were going on, we woke up in the middle of the night and heard someone walking across our back deck," Tieman said.

Its true factor that Burglaries rise now a days we should be self protective by our self as well as defend them in these kind of situation. We should learn some martial arts and use some self protective devices at the time.

Hi Pepper Spray King: I encourage homeowners and individuals alike to have some type of personal protection device in their home and when they are out and about. Pepper spray and mace spray are perfect devices to keep handy near the front door. Also, having some self-defense training and awareness is also a good thing to have. Thanks for commenting.

Why have a home security system when you have guns and dogs? :P

  • 5 admin // Mar 17, 2009 at 7:59 am

Hello Sarah: Smart burglaries can get around most dogs and sometimes they do the worst thing - kill your dog. I do think dogs are a good part of one’s overall security protection. Although they can’t call the police for help!

As far as having a gun…a gun does you no good when you aren’t there to use it.

A gun is great when you are home to protect and defend yourself with. However, a gun is exactly what these criminals are looking to steal from you.

Install a good quality security system that will notify the police and others in case of an emergency/burglary/home invasion, but keep your dog and guns too!
