Bad Economy Causing More Home Burglaries? What’s Your Solution?

Below is a recent article on home burglaries that are happening more and more across the country.  Is it because  people are losing their jobs, many more have been out of work, and our economy is suffering?  Or is it because breaking into homes is just an easy "job" for these lazy perpetrators?

I prefer to call home burglars and home invaders exactly what they are as they wreak havoc upon our  neighborhoods and communities.  These guys are downright "terrorists."  Yes, they terrorize innocent people who go about trying to provide the best for their home and family, at the same time abiding by the laws that we have, and are respectful of others and teach their children the same.  Yet some low-life predator has the audacity to kick a homeowner’s door in and invade their property- whether the homeowner is there or not - and think they have the right to take what is not theirs.

Our laws are too weak on those caught in home burglaries.  These guys get a slap on the wrist and are out of jail in no time - back to doing what they know best.  With home invasions and home burglaries on the rise, more and more homeowners are resorting to additional protection using non-lethal and lethal weapons (firearms) for protection.  I agree that home security systems are a must in today’s society and see nothing wrong with having a secondary form of personal protection for the violent criminal who is not going to be scared off by the alarm system.  The burglar or home invader may be on drugs, totally wacked out, or just feels he has a few minutes before the police arrive.  He made the effort to break in so he is going to do his deed and take whatever valuables the homeowner has that can easily be carried with him.

If the homeowner happens to confront the intruder without any type of personal protection, the outcome for the defenseless homeowner may be devastating and deadly.  These criminal burglars and home invaders have no sense of what life means.  They would just as soon shoot you, brutally beat you, and leave you for dead!  Do you think you need to arm yourself….at least with some sort of non-lethal device?  Whatever device you select, be sure to get the proper training so you know exactly what to do and make sure it is legal within your city/state.  (Sometimes it appears that the lawmakers are on the side of the criminals because they outlaw personal protection devices like Tasers and Stuns Guns…that are not meant to kill a person but to disable them long enough for the victim to get away to safety.  Be sure to check the laws in your state).

What solution do you have for protecting your home and family from these crazed perpetrators or terrorists?  Take the necessary steps to target harden your home and make it so difficult that the intruder will go someplace else.  If they don’t know you from the neighbor next door and your home is too difficult to get through, they will more than likely go to a much easier home.

Be proactive and don’t become a victim of this senseless crime!

Protect your home and family now!!

Off-duty Baltimore County officer shoots burglars in his home

By Andrea K. Walker | andrea.walker@baltsun.com

An off-duty Baltimore County police officer shot two burglars in his home early this morning, Baltimore City police said.

Police received a call at 7:25 a.m. about a shooting at a house in the 200 block of Evesham Ave. in North Baltimore, near the Baltimore County line. They found two wounded men, each with one gunshot wound, at the home, said city police spokesman Donny Moses.

A Baltimore County police officer who lives at the house, the last on a short block with heavy foliage, shot the men after he found them taking items, including a generator, from the first floor of his home, police said. One of the victims had a weapon, but police wouldn’t say what kind of weapon it was. Moses said it was not a gun.

The police officer had gone downstairs after his wife heard a noise, authorities said..

"She alerted her husband, who grabbed his revolver and went downstairs to check," Moses said.

Police did not release the officer’s name. The suspects were also not identified because they have not been charged, Moses said.

One suspect was taken to Sinai Hospital and the other was taken to Union Memorial Hospital. A tan pickup belonging to the suspects was still parked outside of the house this morning.

Moses said that city detectives interviewed the officer as part of the standard procedure when an officer is involved in a shooting.

The officer has been placed on paid leave, also standard procedure, said Baltimore County police Sgt. Bruce Aris.

The officer’s home is located in the Lake Evesham neighborhood, a small community of about 250 single family homes and 2 apartment buildings, several blocks from Towson. Part of the neighborhood, including the officer’s home, runs parallel to Northern Parkway, but is separated from the thoroughfare by trees.

Moses said the neighborhood is generally quiet and crime-free.

The officer’s home may have been targeted because it looks vacant from the front, Moses said.

Residents of the neighborhood said they generally feel safe in the community, but that the area has had its share of crime.

Jack Clough, a 37-year-old homemaker and student, said Lake Evesham is a nice neighborhood but it often attracts trouble from neighboring areas and nearby bars.

"There are certain establishments that attract riff-raff," he said.

Judith Garrett, 52, said she installed a security system after a neighbor’s home was broken into several months ago and a computer was taken. She said the neighbors across the street had their car broken into recently.

Garrett, who has lived in the neighborhood for four years, saw the police cars and ambulance along her block when she left this morning with her teenage son and a friend to take them to the PSAT.

"It makes me nervous that people are now targeting this neighborhood," Garrett said.
