Recently I did a radio interview with Susan Bartlestone, owner of www.fightsafe.com. Susan is a Personal Safety Expert, author, and teaches personal safety seminars. She has started a new internet radio program called Crime Prevention 101. This radio program will provide valuable tips from experts in the security, self-defense, and safety field. Topics will range from home security, personal safety, self-defense, travel safety, vehicle safety, and so much more. Everyone can benefit from this information.
As soon as I have the details on when her radio program will be aired, I will put a link on Home Security 911 so everyone can check it out.
During my interview with Susan, one of the questions she asked was about putting the alarm signs and decals in the front/back yard and on windows. She wondered if that would be telling the would-be burglar who the alarm company is protecting the home, thus allowing the burglar to “know” how to disarm the system and easily get into the home?
My response was after 20 years of professional experience helping homeowners protect their home and finding peace of mind – that putting the alarm yard signs in the front and back of the home and placing the window decals on all vulnerable windows – was the first line of defense! Once I put the signs and decals in place - that initially started the protection for the homeowner. The homeowner normally had a short wait before installing their security system, but right there – putting the yard signs near the front entry door and a yard sign near the back entry – initially told a would-be burglar DON’T stop here go someplace else !
For over 22 years I have had ADT protection and the signs say it ALL! No matter who you have protecting your home, the alarm signs say, “You break into my home and (3) things are going to happen –“
1. The alarm siren is going to sound off with about a 120 decibel alarm…
2. The homeowner, if at home, knows the alarm has been violated (look out if the homeowner has a gun)…
3. And lastly, the police are going to be notified to go to your house immediately…
Since most burglars are basically lazy, they want to be able to break into a home quickly, quietly, and easily. Hitting a home with an alarm system is not going to be their first choice. There are way too many homes that don’t have security systems – so why bother hitting the one that does?!!
Now if the burglar is a savvy professional burglar and he knows what is inside the home, he may not care and disregard the signs. These type of burglars are usually looking at very upscale homes and wealthy personalities. (Remember this is a job for them). But even the professionals know it is not worth it to try and compromise a security system – especially protected by a company like ADT Security or other reputable alarm companies.
In fact, when I was talking with Susan during the interview she told me the person she had interviewed right before me was an ex-professional home burglar. He had told her that he only broke into extremely wealthy, expensive homes in upscale neighborhoods. He did say that the only homes he bypassed were those that had ADT signs in the yard. He said it wasn’t worth it.
Having a security system not only protects your home and family, but it provides a tremendous amount of peace of mind. Alarm system prices today are within most people’s budget -especially when you consider the alternative (breakin, loss, frazzled peace of mind). Become more proactive with your home safety and look into having an alarm system installed.
Stay safe and protect your home and family. Start your peace of mind today!
